On Monday (19.10.) 17.30 at FT 809 Hans-Georg Betz, University of Zurich, will present his paper titled The Logic of Populist Mobilization across Time and Space’.

Short introduction:

Populist parties and movements are firmly established in contemporary liberal democracies.  Yet it is still not entirely clear what mechanisms account for their initial breakthrough and success.  A comparison of five populist mobilizations across time and space (late nineteenth-century United States and France, early twentieth-century Colombia, late twentieth-century Italy and current-day Spain) suggests that there is a distinct logic to populist mobilization.  The analysis confirms the crucial importance of the appeal to emotions provoked by a profound sense of social injustice to the success of populist projects.
